The liver fulfills many vital processes in mammals. It is the central organ of energy metabolism, responsible for the maintenance of the blood sugar level and the synthesis of plasma proteins under physiological and pathophysiological conditions.
Hepatocytes are the most prominent cells within the liver. Hepatocytes eliminate toxic substances from the blood. In this biotransformation process transporter proteins (influx and efflux transporter), phase I reactions (cytochrome P450 proteins), phase II reactions (mainly glucuronidation and sulfatation) play a central role.
PRIMACYT is one of the pioneers in the development of advanced in vitro model systems. We are a leading company in the field of research of human and animal hepatocytes. We offer fresh and cryopreserved animal hepatocytes in suspension and plated.
PRIMACYT is approved by the European Commission as an EU Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) since 2013 and serves as member of the laboratory network responsible for the method validation.
Our colleagues are professionals and undergo continuous training in the preparation, isolation and cryopreservation of hepatocytes in general, including related co-products, methods and tools. We are a GLP certified laboratory since 2006.
The Common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a small New World monkey that is currently emerging as the NHP (Non Human Primate) species of choice for biomedical research and drug development studies. The potential advantages using marmosets include
- Small size (average body weight 350 g)
- Reduced amount of test drugs required (approx. 1/10 compared to macaque monkeys)
- Easy handling
- High reproductive efficacy in captivity
- Rapid growth
- Rapid sexual maturity (by 12-18 month of age)
Marmoset models have been widely used in biomedical research, particularly in neu-roscience, infectious diseases, and preclinical studies for the development of novel drugs and therapies. The development of experimental disease and preclinical marmoset models, has expanded research applications using this species.
Hepatitis C Virus studies
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an important human pathogen that infects over 150 million individuals worldwide and leads to chronic liver disease. Marmoset hepatocytes can be infected by retroviral particles pseudo-typed with HCV glycoproteins, providing a promising basis for further HCV adaptions to small primate hosts.

Marmoset hepatocytes are considered the “gold standard” for in vitro drug metabolism, transport, and hepatotoxicity studies. The ability of cultured hepatocytes to maintain in vivo-like enzyme levels and cellular functions provides highly predictive data for assessing metabolic stability and potential liver-related adverse effects. The close resemblance of marmoset hepatic function to humans offers a unique advantage for translational research in drug development.
Marmoset hepatocytes are isolated from livers obtained from male donors. Donor demographics stating vaccination status and health status of the animals are available for each animal.
PRIMACYT offers certified single donor hepatocytes. Each lot is tested use in suspension assays, plateability in 2D and 3D formats, and Cytochrome P450 inducibility.
