Animal health plays an important role not only for the welfare of pets and domestic farm animals but also for animals used in food production. For the development of veterinary drugs we offer liver cells from a variety of species including dog, horse, sheep, goat, pig, poultry and fish.
A number of these animals also play an important role in environmental risk assessment of herbicides and fungicides used in crop protection. Isolated hepatocytes from ruminants, poultry and fish have increasingly become an important research tool in metabolism and bioaccumulation studies. Cost-saving test methods using hepatocyte cultures as alternatives to animal experiments will reduce the number of animal experiments and are currently introduced into OECD test guidelines.
PRIMACYT is one of the pioneers in the development of advanced in vitro model systems. We are a leading company in the field of research of human and animal hepatocytes. We offer fresh and cryopreserved animal hepatocytes in suspension and plated.
PRIMACYT is approved by the European Commission as an EU Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) since 2013 and serves as member of the laboratory network responsible for the method validation.
Our colleagues are professionals and undergo continuous training in the preparation, isolation and cryopreservation of hepatocytes in general, including related co-products, methods and tools. We are a GLP certified laboratory since 2006.
Animal Tissue Performance and Regulations. The acquisition of animal tissue is performed under permits 3902-046-2017 and DE 13 076 0001 21 from the Landkreis Ludwigslust-Parchim, Department of Veterinary- and Foodstuff Control, following EU Regulation No. 1029/2009, Art. 17 and 23 and permit 7221.3-2-004/17 from the Ministry for Agriculture, Food Safety and Fishery of the State Mecklenburg-Pomerania in accordance with EU Regulation 2010/63/EU, and with several additional regulations for the protection of animals (e.g., TierSchG dated July 18, 2016, and TierSchVerV dated August 31, 2015) used for experimentation and other scientific purposes.

PRIMACYT offers cryopreserved sheep hepatocytes (Suffolk sheep) from single donors. Sheep are obtained from local part-time farmers. They are herd book registered. The sheep are slaughtered in home slaughter under the supervision of the local veterinary office.
Hepatocytes are cryopreserved directly after isolation. Each individual single donor is comprehensively tested for viability, plateability and for use in suspension assays.
